Don't Shoot! We May Both Be On The Same Side (A Curriculum Guide for Working Together and Resolving Conflicts)
Published in Spiral-bound by Educational Media Corp (January, 1998)
Authors: Kathy Beckwith and Carol Henderson
Average review score:

Fun, Active, and Absolutely Usable!
How can we get kids to really USE violence prevention skills at school? That's the question I asked as I wrote this book. It had to be fun, even though problem-solving can be hard work. It had to actively engage the kids, so that they would learn by doing. It had to be powerful enough to give kids not only know-how, but also the courage to try the things they were learning. And it had to be easy to teach.
We took 10 skills - life skills for all of us - and put them in kid language and kid scenarios. For each one, there is "Something to Think About" and Something to Do" - games, skits, story-related crafts, drawing, role plays, even a theme song to sing along with. Then the skills are put to use in "Think It Over - Talk It Over" negotiation, and in the processes of class meetings and peer mediation. (The mediation section can launch a program at your school. It's awesome! We rob our kids of one of the most amazing opportunities of the time if we don't let them mediate for each other.)
Reproducible handouts let the kids create their own Conflict Resolution Manual as the study progresses. This book can be used by families, children's organizations, church school programs, and home-schoolers as well. I think the skit "One Orange Orange" is worth the price of the book in its impact! Have fun! - Kathy
Wondering what 10 skills are covered? They are...
* Listening Without Stoppers
*Talking One at a Time
* Empathizing
* Seeing Another Viewpoint
* Describing & Attacking the Problem, Not the Person
* Recognizing and Naming Feelings
* Recognizing Positions and Needs
* Reaching Consensus
* Dealing with Anger, Calming
* Making Amends

Dress Code Mess (Ghostwriter)

I think this book is really realistic
The reason I think this book is really realistic is because the teacher Ms Willow was really out of her mind with the dress code at school.When Lenny made a protest against it I agreed with her 100%. Because that really happens in schools.

Duchamp in Context
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (20 July, 1998)
Author: Linda Dalrymple Henderson
Average review score:

Seeing Through the 'Large Glass'
Marcel Duchamp, the Puck of modern art, left copious notes on the 'Large Glass', which he left 'definively unfinished' in 1923 after seven years' work. The complexity and mischief in this piece, and in Duchamp's wider approach to art, has traditionally been subjected to analysis that places teleological art history ahead of the confusion of cultural history. Linda Henderson's approach places Duchamp in the context of the scientific understanding of the time, and her comprehensive research has cut through to the core questions with which Duchamp engaged.

Looking at the 1920s from our time, we are afflicted by a cultural blindness to ideas that have fallen from favour. Henderson looks beyond the prejudices of orthodoxy, and considers Duchamp's own writings and the popular understanding of science and technology that held sway eighty years ago. This clarifies aspects of the 'Large Glass' on which other writers have been silent; the significance of early wireless technology, the lingering concept of the 'ether', and early cathode-tube researches.

Despite the density and unfamiliarity of the ideas presented, and the inherent difficulty of explaining Duchamp's conceptual barrage, Henderson lively and clear approach is an exemplary and honest engagement with the conditions of art production. In no sense does she engineer the evidence so that a streamlined art-historical position can purr smoothly; she presents the material that informed Duchamp's ideas, shows how he processed this material, and argues persuasively for a Duchamp who responded to his setting rather than a deified modernist who worked in the vacuum of his own genius. Good art history enhances our understanding of art, history, and society. Henderson's honesty, and her sense of scholarly security, make for an invaluable contribution to the literature on a crucial and cunning giant of modern art.

About This Plan
Disaster Management, Inc. (DMI) is a company completely dedicated to the development of emergency management plans and we specialize in planning for educational institutions. Beginning in 1995 DMI co-authored the Business Continuation Plan for Academic Institutions. The manual, which includes a planning template, is used by over 100 institutions in America and by a number of Colleges & Universities in foreign countries.

Over the last several years DMI has consulted with a number of major Colleges & Universities and, more recently, with Public and Private (K-12) Schools developing and improving their plans. The Emergency Management Plan for Public and Private Schools (K-12) is the result of years of research and practical application in an academic environment. Key features of the plan are as follows:

·Schools must be able to respond to a wide variety of emergency situations and new response procedures need to be defined as a result of 9/11. Often faculty and staff are the initial responders and many of these individuals are untrained in incident response. Special sections of this Emergency Management Plan for Public & Private School (K-12) are devoted to incident response techniques.

·Separate incident response plans are provided for the school, school faculty & staff, and for students. All incident response plans are written in a concise format so that they will be useful in the field in an actual emergency situation.

·Standard planning developed in the corporate world needs substantial modification for application in the academic world. This new work incorporates a planning structure that is both compatible with an academic environment and effective in an actual emergency situation.

·Many emergency situations require the coordination of multiple organizational resources. All organizational resource departments and all school campuses are assigned specific responsibilities and are provided with templates with a standardized organizational format.

Just the Essentials
Henderson's book is well written. I stayed fairly well engaged while reading each chapter. Some of the jargon used on sailing vessels went a bit over my head, but for the most part all terms and concepts are explained. There is just enough information on each topic to educate without overwhelming the beginner. If there is one thing that I would like to have seen, it is an updated edition with more information relating to GPS. The Information contained in the book is somewhat outdated. I definitely would recommend this book.

Experiencing Geometry: In Euclidean, Spherical and Hyperbolic Spaces (2nd Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall College Div (28 July, 2000)
Authors: David W. Henderson and Daina Taimina
Average review score:

Geometry Teacher Likes It!!
I found this book caused me to rethink much of how I approach Geometry personally and in my classroom. From the first problem, "What is Straight?" which had me thinking about my own assumptions straight lines, I have been thinking of ways to approach Geometry differently with my students.

I enjoy the problem-centered exposition, but at times, I wish I had a little more direction. The emphasis on INTUITIVELY understanding what is going on in these different spaces, and on working with physical models (the hyperbolic models are cool), is a refreshing change from an algebraic/matrix approach. This book is all about DOING geometry, and formulating convincing arguements to your "Why?" questions.

An extensive catalogue on the works of a great painter
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, not only because W.S. Haseltine is my great-great-grandfather and I own some of his fine works. The authors took great care researching his life and arts as well as the wonderful works he did. W.S. Haseltine is a fine example for sophisticated American art.

Beautiful Illustrations
Although this is considered a history book, it could as easily be considered an art book. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is written, the second is illustrated. The first part is essentially an essay, as it goes through the conquest of Mexico in less than tirty pages. The text is very easy to read and can be read by adolescents. The second part is the true gem of this book as the illustrations are by Keith Henderson,who illustrated the two-volume edition of "The Conquest of Mexico" by Prescott. Henderson was so impressed with Prescott's "The Conquest Of Mexico" that he created these pen and ink drawings in 1922. The original prints have long been out of print but have been revived here. The ilustrations are exceptional and not to be missed by any history buff or lover of art that deals with the Aztecs and their conquest.
